PACKAGING AND APPEARANCE

This SSD comes in a box of black thin cardboard with a nice matte texture. On the front side, there is an image of the device, and on the reverse, you can find general information and a window through which you can see the SSD.

Inside, the product is stowed in a black plastic mold. In the kit, you will also find a plastic frame that is attached to the disc on double-sided tape. It is needed to install the drive in old laptops, where disks with a thickness of 9.5 mm were used. We did not find a warranty card and instructions in the test sample kit, but it is subject to a limited warranty for 5 years, taking into account the overwrite resource.

The body of the device is made of thin aluminum, painted black, which not only gives the model lightness and attractive appearance but also serves as a passive cooling of the internals of the drive.

The dimensions of the drive are 100 x 70 x 7 mm, and the weight of the tested sample per 1 TB is 44 grams. On top of the case, there is a pleasant touch sticker with the logo of the IRDM PRO series, indicating the manufacturer and generation of SSD. On the reverse side there is a second sticker, but with technical data about the device. On one of the ends, there are interfaces for connection – 15-pin for the SATA power cable and 7-pin for the SATA transmission cable.

SPECIFICATIONS AND TESTS

Inside the case, which is generally easy to disassemble without the need to unwind something, hides a board in blue. All the chips are soldered on it on one side. Heading here is the PRISON PS3112-S12-27 SATA III controller with Kingston’s 2GB DDR3L-1866 DRAM buffer (D1216ECMDXGJD). In the role of NAND-memory installed 96-layer chips TLC 3D NAND from TOSHIBA (TA7BG65AWV).

The manufacturer claims basic read speeds of up to 555 MB/s and writes up to 535 MB/s for drives of 256 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. The 512 GB drive has a slightly higher write speed and is 540 MB/s.

The maximum random read and write speed of the 1 TB model is up to 92,000 IOPS and 86,000 IOPS, respectively. Operating temperature – from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. The overwrite resource of the tested sample is designed for 870 TB, and the MTBF is 1.5 million hours.

For testing, we used a stand with support for interface SATA III 6 Gb/s. The test build is as follows:

Motherboard: ASUS X99-A;
Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K @ 3633 MHz;
RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz;
System SSD: ADATA SX8200PNP
Test SSD: IRDM PRO GEN. 2 x 1TB (IRP-SSDPR-S25C-01T)
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition;
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro ver. 21H1.
Testing of the device was carried out in the applications Crystal Disk Mark, Crystal Disk Info, AS SSD, AIDA64, and Anvil’s Storage Utilities. The drive worked in SATA/600 mode.

In the classic Crystal Disk Mark, this SSD showed itself very well in sequential tests, demonstrating performance even higher than stated. IRDM PRO GEN. 2 by 1 TB yielded 560 MB/s for reading and 540 MB/s for writing. It also demonstrates normal indicators for random writing and reading.

Copying a 45 GB video folder from the system NVMe SSD to the GOODRAM IRDM M.2 took 1 minute and 29 seconds. Copying took place at an average speed of 510-520 MB/s.

The maximum temperature during the tests reached 28 degrees in a closed case with 4 fans (3 for blowing and 1 for blowing), and with a simple one, it is kept at around 25 degrees.

Next, we decided to check out the IRDM PRO GEN. 2 in games and installed Cyberpunk 2077 on it, which was launched on impressive graphics settings with ray tracing. The start of the new game before loading the prologue “Child of the Streets” took only 8 seconds. It took 11 seconds to load in the “Little China” area at the entrance to the H10 Mega Tower from the main menu. The quick move from offshore Street in Northside to Metro: Allison Street in Little China took 16 seconds.

TOTAL

IRDM PRO GEN. 2 is an excellent SATA III SSD with a decent level of speed and low heat, which is suitable for those who want to expand the space on their PC for games, movies, music, and photos. In addition, as personal practice shows, owners of old laptops can easily breathe a second life into their devices by replacing just an old hard drive with a new and fast SSD, and IRDM PRO GEN. 2 for this everything is included.
